The ISTE standard I have chosen to focus on is standard #3. This states that the teacher will be able to model digital-age work and learning. The teacher will be able to exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers will be able to demonstrate a fluency in technology and be able to transfer this knowledge to different situations. They will be able to collaborate with students, peers, parents, and the community with digital tools and communicate relevant information and ideas as well.
Currently I am up to date with how to communicate through emailing and social media websites like Facebook and Twitter. I have the ability to video chat using iChat and Skype. I know how to use programs like Word Processor, Excel, and Powerpoint and how to utilize those in the classroom and everyday life. I have made one website before, but am unfamiliar with this technology and would have to be taught again.
Why is this important?
There is a need for future teachers to be able be up to date with this because it is the fastest way to communicate with their students, parents, faculty, and community. Technology has revolutionized the way we receive information and it is the teacher's job to be able to rely this on to others. If the teacher is not up to date with this, it may cause a gap in their students' learning.
Long Term Goals
My goal is to be able to be up to date on all the latest global software dealing with communication and how to work them. I want to be able to transfer current information to my peers and future students. I want to have the technology to collaborate with peers and future students as well with a variety of different digital age media. I want to be able to know how to make a podcast, create a video that I can upload onto the, and how to edit both the sound and picture of both of these. My goal also includes being able to edit websites, pictures, and other technologies. I want to be able to teacher others how to use these skills as well.
Short Term Goals
During this class I will try and read 1 news article on upcoming technology a week, especially the different and new technologies that current teachers are using in their classrooms. I will watch a new tutorial video on Youtube once a week on how to use various technologies that I would like to master.
Long Term Goals
Long term I would like to continue to take technology classes so I can stay up to date and not forget all the technological information I have learned. By the end of this year I will measure this by if I have taken at least one class on furthering my technology.
Assessment of Goals
I will know that I have accomplished this if I have taken at least one other technology class within the year and have learned about all the new and up and coming technology. Also, if I have taught a peer how to use a new technological tool I will feel successful.
Reflection
During the duration of this class I was able to meet part of my short term goals. Throughout the course I read two articles two weeks in a row. One of the articles was about Smartboards in the classroom and the other was about current and popular podcasts. I was able to watch some tutorial videos during the class. I would use these a lot to help me while I was working on my projects for the class. I was able to watch one on how to freeze frame into a iMovie, change the color settings of you movie in an iMovie, and one at the beginning of the course about how to use a wikispace. So, I did not get to read or watch as many articles and videos I would like, but I believe I would like to continue to read and watch about upcoming technoogy to keep me up to date.
As far as my long term goals go. I do still want to take more technology classes if I have time. It would be a great way to keep up the new skills I have learned. I hope by the end of the year I can say that I have taken at least one, even if it is only a weekend workshop. To add to my long term goals, I would like to continue to read articles about new upcoming technology so I know what is ahead of me in the future. I also believe that I want to continue to watch youtube and video tutorials to keep me up to date on how to work certain technologies. Watching these videos has really helped me hone my skills that I have been learning so I think it will be a great way to keep me sharp on my skills.
In the future I would like to incorporate many of the technologies and teaching I have learned in this class into my first teaching position. I know I will for sure want to use a wikispace or other form of webpage. This is such an easy way to keep your students and parents in contact and communication with you. I want to teach my students with the technologies I have learned how to use because I know it will keep their attention more than if I just lectured to them. Using the technology I have learned will help make my lessons more interactive and fun for the kids while they are learning. To extend my learning on technology I would like to go to different technology seminars so I can learn all about the new technologies and potential that is out there to improve teaching and learning. It would be great if I could then come back and teach my fellow teachers and faculity how to use different types of technology.
